FIND TEXT How PrEP Works

PrEP helps prevent HIV by keeping the virus from establishing an infection in your body if you are exposed. When taken as prescribed, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by up to 99%.

Who PrEP Is For

PrEP may be right for you if you are HIV negative and may be at risk for HIV. This includes people who:

Have a sexual partner with HIV.

Have multiple sexual partners.

Do not consistently use condoms.

Have been diagnosed with an STI in the past year.

Are in a relationship where one partner is HIV positive.

PrEP is for people who are HIV negative. It is not a treatment for HIV.

Daily Oral PrEP Options (Truvada and Descovy)

There are two FDA-approved daily oral medications for PrEP: Truvada and Descovy. Both are safe and effective when taken as prescribed. Your GotPrep clinician will help you choose the option that's right for you based on your health, lifestyle, and how you may be exposed to HIV.

Truvada

(tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine)

Descovy

(tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine)

Testing and Follow-Up Care

Before starting PrEP, you’ll have a lab test to confirm you are HIV negative and to check your overall health. After starting, you’ll have follow-up testing every 3 months to make sure PrEP is working well for you.

Initial lab testing

HIV test and other routine tests.

Follow-up visits

Every 3 months.

Ongoing support

To help you stay on track.

Effectiveness and Protection

99%

reduction in the risk of getting HIV from sex when taken as prescribed.

PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV. It does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so regular testing and condom use are still recommended.

Important

PrEP only works when you take it. Taking it every day as prescribed gives you the best protection.

Safety and Side Effects

PrEP is safe and well tolerated. Most people do not have serious side effects. Some people may have mild side effects when they first start, such as nausea, stomach upset, or headache. These usually go away within a few weeks.

Serious side effects are rare.

Your provider will review your medical history and lab results to make sure PrEP is a safe option for you.
